Highlands Academy

First Steps

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
—Proverbs 22: 6

The Academy is a home-school. This means that we will support you as the teacher/tutor/parent in instructing your child in the subjects he needs for success in life. Our goal is to provide you with solid teaching material at minimal cost and an intimate, individual approach to instruction. We provide to tutors and enrolled students study guides and curricular plans, individual testing, placement, guidance on teaching, and direct support for academic questions.

You will want to look at our course offerings and programs. This will give you a better idea of what it is that we teach. The approach is quite simple: you will do the teaching; I suggest the materials to use and support you in your teaching. You still have quite a bit of work to do. However, the work you do is the personal kind of interaction that is not possible for me to accomplish on-line.

Each child has his own needs, his own pace in study, and his own contribution to make in life. Not every child will thrive in a highly competitive college; not every child should go to college. What we want to develop in each of our children is Wisdom, Understanding, and Holiness. This does not mean that every child will become fluent in Latin and be able to solve problems in Physics. But, each child should be brought up to live his life wisely, to understand his duty and how to carry it out, and to walk in holiness all his days.

The academic training we help you provide is only part of that. As a parent, you must ensure that the child is involved in positive social, cultural, physical, and religious activities that help him develop as a person. As we carry out, together, the academic training for which the Academy is designed, let us keep in mind this higher purpose.

To get started, you will need to figure out where to start in the program. To begin the assessment, I suggest that you consider the age of the student, his level of maturity in taking on minimally supervised work, and his skills in numeracy and literacy. If you provide me with this information, I will send you a detailed evaluation guide. Return the guide to me, and I will design a program especially suited to the student. This program may include preparatory work that must be completed before beginning the age-level program, so it is beneficial to begin the evaluation as soon as possible.
