Foundation Studies

The Foundation Studies are designed for students, of at least age ten, who are ready to embark on a systematic study of the history, literature, arts, mathematics, and sciences at an introductory level. The program is designed to take two or three years of work. The work is divided into six terms; each term consists of twelve sessions. A session is expected to require one to two weeks of work.

The order of study in the Humanities and Sciences is approximately historical, but we have not slavishly adhered to any artificial scheme. In the first two terms, we study the civilizations of Egypt, Rome, and Greece. The second two terms examines the Middle Ages, Reformation, and Renaissance. The final two terms cover the Victorian Age and Modern history. The student is expected to master English Grammar and Composition and to gain a basic understanding of the French language. Latin is optional.

Elocution, the ability to read aloud with confidence and proper expression, is an integral part of the program. Basic skills in using the computer are included in the course: word-processing, e-mail, calendars, spreadsheets, and presentation software. A separate Computing Course is available to students who want to learn programming and game design.

Entry to the Foundation Studies program is not competitive. However, it is desirable for the student to have mastered the basic skills and subject matter expected for graduates of our Preparatory Program. I have outlined these expectations under "Admission Requirements." If the student does not have adequate preparation, I am happy to help you design a program that will prepare him for entry.

The courses have been developed without special regard to particular state requirements, but should exceed such requirements for grades five through eight. It is ultimately your responsibility to make sure it does so. We are happy to provide help in modifying the program to suit your needs.
